How to Apply

GradTrack students applying to the MS program should contact Dr. Helen Potts (Helen.Potts@unt.edu) for instructions. All other applicants should follow the instructions below.

To apply to a UNT Sociology graduate program (MS, MS-to-PhD Pass-Through, PhD-only, and/or graduate certificates) please follow this process.

    1. Start Your Application

Create an application through the UNT GradCAS (Centralized Application System) portal.

    1. Submit Application Materials

Inside the application portal, complete the following:

      • Request official transcripts from every college or university you have attended. If you are applying prior to graduating with your bachelor’s degree, submit your current transcript to allow for admissions consideration. If admitted, you will be required to submit a final transcript with your degree posted.
      • Upload required application materials, including your resume/CV and a statement of purpose (SOP) detailing your areas of research interest and the department faculty with whom you wish to collaborate.
      • Provide contact information for two recommenders to submit letters of recommendation (LORs) via our system.

NOTE: Graduate Record Exam (GRE General Test) results are not required for Sociology graduate program applicants.

    1. Pay Application Fee

Submit the $75 non-refundable payment for the application, which will prompt the Toulouse Graduate School to begin the evaluation process.

    1. Department Review

Once all required materials have been received and approved by the Toulouse Graduate School, your application will be forwarded to the Department of Sociology’s Graduate Studies Committee for review. The Toulouse Graduate School will notify you of the final admission decision, and the department will contact you directly if you are offered funding.

Deadlines

Applications for fall admission: February 1 for priority/funding consideration

Applications for spring admission: November 1 (NOTE: spring admittees will not be considered for funding)

Applications received by February 1 for fall admission will receive priority consideration for funding opportunities -- see more on our funding page. Applications received after that date will be considered for funding only if opportunities remain available. Generally, the department only provides funding (e.g., teaching assistantships) for applicants to the MS-to-PhD Pass-Through program and the PhD-only program.

After February 1, applications for fall admission will be reviewed monthly through July 31. Due to the sequencing of the courses in the Sociology graduate curriculum, we only consider MS-to-PhD and PhD-only applications for fall admission, except in very specific circumstances. However, applications for the MS-only program may be submitted for either fall or spring admission.

International Applicants

International applicants should review information about submitting academic documents here.
